Hooray!

I feel like a new woman today.

Yesterday was rough.  Edith had a bad night so it was a VERY long day, with Martin at work from 9 am and a lot to do on not much sleep.  We made it through though, and I cleaned the house and prepared awesome Chinese food for dinner.  We even had Christine over since she's not been feeling well lately.  And, the best bit of yesterday, we bought a car.  It's not my first choice, but I'm sure I'll learn to love it.

I've been in a funk ever since the sale on that Seat fell through.  It's funny, because with NO car we were automatically £150 a month better off, but not having one makes me feel poor.  There I sat with loads of cash in my front room, knowing that I didn't have a £50 monthly insurance bill to pay and that I wouldn't have to shell out £80 a month on petrol, and I was all depressed about being broke.  This car is a Nissan Primera, and it's got a much smaller engine so should REALLY help with the fuel consumption.  And it will cost about £18 less per month to insure.  It's a nice car.  I'm trying to get excited about it.

That's not what the "Hooray" was for though.  It's all about that adorable little monster baby of mine.

She's been waking up two or three times a night for the past 6 weeks, feeding for about 5 minutes, then going back to sleep.  We decided to just let her fuss last night, and she slept through.  Well, she fussed for about 15 minutes at 1 this morning.  But she went back to sleep on her own, and then woke up at 5am--15 minutes before Dylan did.  She had a good feed, then went back to sleep.  That was 2 1/2 hours ago.

It feels so good to get a decent night's sleep!

Anyway, I need to get ready for the day.  We are going on a little drive with Christine to pick up our "new" car.  We have to go to Derbyshire.  That could be really fun, since we'll be in the peak district.  It could also be a really long day.  We'll see.  Derbyshire is lovely, and we're going somewhere I've never been.  That's kind of exciting.  I'll bring the camera in case there are any great photo ops.

Happy road tripping...

Things are definitely looking up...

It's absolutely amazing what a good night's sleep will do for a girl. After spending one of the longest weeks of my life in a near-zombie state, I now feel prepared to go at least another 9 days until I have the baby!

Saturday was rough. After getting about 1 hour of sleep Friday night, Dylan wouldn't take a nap. So I got zero sleep during the day, which was bad!!! Then, while I was making dinner for my boys Dylan slipped on the skirting board for his nursery and banged his chin on the edge of the piano. He cut it pretty badly and spent the next 45 minutes or so sobbing and bleeding all over both of us. When he hadn't stopped bleeding 3 hours later, we decided we should take him to the emergency room. So we got him into his pajamas, packed his sippy cup full of milk, grabbed a few bed time books, and drove in to Scunny. 2 hours later, we came home. He didn't have to have stitches, thank goodness. They just cleaned him up and glued the cut. He has a big bruise all around the cut, as well. Poor kid looks like he's been in a fight as he already had a scratch on his eyelid where he whacked the coffee table on Friday night. But he's a trooper and is just fine now.

Martin was awesome yesterday. He prepared all three meals for us, and let me get a 2 hour nap. I needed it desperately, and felt much better for it. Then we went over to the in-laws' house and watched "Lost." They've been recording it for us since we don't have Sky any more and that's the channel it's being shown on. They had Dylan overnight so Martin and I could sleep in this morning, which we very gratefully did. And I got around 8 hours of sleep! That is why it is nap time and even though Dylan and I are both awake we are doing just fine. I'm tired, but not exhausted.

This morning was good, as well. I had an early midwife appointment (totally routine and boring, but I'll be seeing them again in just 10 days' time) and did my grocery shopping without Dylan. Martin got up after I left for my appointment and fixed some of the skirting board in the kids' room. Just one more length to go, and then we need to fill the nail holes and the gaps between the wall and board. Then it's a quick paint touch up (and a minor plaster repair job) and we're done. Just closet doors to go, and Martin's grandad is making those.

In midwife news, when they measured me this morning we discovered that I am officially off the charts. They contacted the hospital to see if the consultant wanted to see me again since this is obviously such a big baby. But I haven't heard back from them, and no news is good news. Right? There's nothing they can do about it though, even if they DO see me again, so I just have to be patient.

And that's the update. Nothing too exciting, but we're all doing well and are happy and healthy and staying busy.

Baby drama...

Dylan has weird little spots on his chest and back. I wasn't overly concerned about them, but Martin was concerned. He had me take Dylan to see our GP today, and we were referred to the hospital. Dr. Wellings said they just needed to do a few blood tests to rule out meningitis or a platelet problem, but we were there for 5 hours. Count them--FIVE!

We weren't even seen until we'd been there for 2 hours. Not fun when you are 9+ months pregnant and uncomfortable/exhausted at the best of times. But Martin is insisting that I remind everyone--it was completely free. Other than the high cost of petrol to drive us to the hospital and the fact that you have to pay to park in their parking lot. Once again, Martin is interjecting, it beats a $6000 bill.

To make a long story short, once again we have been told that there is nothing wrong with Dylan. At least not with the spots. They think it is most likely a viral infection of some kind that makes his small blood vessels weak and they burst easily. However, one of the doctors thinks she heard a slight murmur when she was listening to his heart. She thinks it's benign but has referred us to a specialist clinic just in case. She is also sending a recommendation to our GP that he refer us to a dermatologist for the skin problem.

So our afternoon and evening didn't go exactly as planned. But Dylan had a great time at thehospital because they had a fully loaded play room with lots of trucks, crayons, and a play kitchen. We were there for so long that we had to make an emergency run to Tesco to buy extra diapers, milk and pajamas. But he was good as gold, even when they drew blood. He even went to sleep in a regular bed instead of a crib.

We have an awesome son!

It's started now...

Not my labor, unfortunately. The pain is back!

I do feel grateful that it only just started this week. I was in agony for the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy with Dylan, and I have a miximum of 5 weeks to go with Newbie. My pelvis has started to seperate though, and sleeping is so painful! The pain I can deal with, but the sleeplessness that it causes is another story. I have always valued my sleep, and can handle just about anything as long as I am well rested. But for the last two nights I have only been able to catch about 5 hours as I am waking up every 90 minutes or so.

Mom has always told me that you forget the pain of labor and birth. I haven't forgotten that--it's as vivid as if it happened yesterday (of course, it was only 18 months ago so maybe it takes more time than that). What I HAD forgotten was how miserable pregnancy can be. My one hope is that this baby will be a little bit early, or even on time.

We had a visitor yesterday--a new friend from church named Noelle. She is a fellow North American, though she's from the east coast of Canada. She went to BYU though, so she sounds pretty Utah if you know what I mean. The Canadian slips out every once in a while, and she is much more British in her speech than I am. She's not married and has no kids, but she has fun hanging out with Dylan. We took him to the park and she stayed for dinner. It's nice to hang out with girl friends, and also nice to talk to grown ups during the day.

I have been absolutely foul to Martin this week, and I feel so bad about it. I am having raging pregnancy mood swings and the pain and lack of sleep are not helping. He is so great, and all I can do is snap at him. Last night he worked on the nursery and got it all ready to paint. Plus I had a craving for rocky road icecream (hard to get here) so he went to Tesco and bought chocolate icecream and marshmallows and MADE me rocky road icecream. You'd think I could at least be nice to him after that, but NO! I've never been nasty to him whilst pregnant before. Poor guy!

We will be doing the undercoat in the nursery tonight. I'm pretty excited about that. Maybe if I do some painting it will make me tired enough to sleep a little bit more. Once the nursery is painted and the carpet is down, we just have the stairwells to re-do and a coat of paint to throw up in a few rooms and the house is ready to put on the market. Then we can sell it and move home. Hooray!

Oh, and GOOD news in the UK housing market. House prices increased by 1.9% in January--it's the first time they haven't fallen in 10 months. If this trend continues, maybe we will be able to make a decent profit on our house. The more we can make on our house sale, the better off we'll be when we come back to Utah!

Nothing special...

I'm very proud of myself this week. Last week when I started to feel my cold coming on, I increased my dosage of my steroids inhaler. My asthma flared up, but I am now almost completely recovered. I still have a few lingering traces of cold, but am feeling pretty good. Lucky for me, as it turns out, since I have hit that stage in my pregnancy.

All you ladies that have babies will know what I'm talking about. It's the point where things start to hurt and even doing simple daily tasks becomes a huge chore. You have to bend over funny to wash the dishes, hold your breath to shave your legs, and sometimes need help standing up if you've been sitting for a long time. The nervousness about bringing home a new baby is overshadowed by your desperate longing to get the kid out! Being pregnant isn't fun any more!!!

I thought I'd be doing my birth plan at the midwive's this week, but it's in two weeks time. That's pretty exciting. All of my vitals are good, and the baby seems to be thriving still. Good news--it's head down. I was pretty sure it was, since I've been getting tiny toes in my ribs for weeks now. The head isn't engaged, but it's probably big enough now that I don't have to worry about it being breach.

I have another ultrasound on Thursday--it should be my last one, and I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully they aren't so busy this time so I can request a picture of the baby's face. Last time they were so busy that I didn't want to impose.

In Dylan news, the terrible twos are hitting us early and with a vengence. Dylan is still a sweetie, but he is so willful and stubborn and I reach my wits' end with him on a fairly regular basis. He is just so stubborn!!! He is also getting a whole mouthful of teeth at the same time, and that's not helping. He's testing his limits daily, and I feel like all I do is tell him no. So frustrating, but the cuddles at the end of the day make it all worth it. Plus, I know that if we don't stick to our guns now we will end up with a little tyrant. It's critical for us to teach him and be consistent with him right now.

Martin is a super star! He is still only working part time, but has his safety passport course booked and will be (most likely) doing the shutdown work come April. In the mean time, he is cracking away on the closet in the kids' room. He nearly has it ready for me to finish off the plastering. We won't have it painted by the time we pick out the carpet, but we'll have it painted before the carpet is laid. It's going to be done really soon, and I have my lovely husband to thank for it. I don't deserve a husband this good!

So that's the update. Like I said, nothing special!

Hospital appointment...

I have a great family in England!!!

Laurence came over this morning and watched Dylan for me while I went to my hospital appointment. He also fixed my oven while he was here (the thermostat was broken). Christine is coming over tonight to watch Dylan while Martin and I go out on a date (she bought us tickets to see a pantomime--I'll have Martin explain that one later). What superstars!

So my hospital appointment was good. The scan was a bit of a disappointment because they were in a big hurry and I didn't feel like I could ask them to take the time to let me see Newbie's face. But I was amazed to see the difference that 10 weeks has made in terms of development. The baby was all fleshed out and chubby looking-completely adorable. And I have another scan booked four weeks from now. I also have a glucose tolerance test booked for the 26th (which happens to be the same date that Dylan sees the pediatrician).

Dr. Roberts, the consultant at the hospital, was really nice. He must have been having a bad day when I saw him during my pregnancy with Dylan, because I wasn't terribly impressed by him then. And he gave me good news. This baby is measuring on the big side of "average," but it's not as big as Dylan would have been at this stage of pregnancy (based on his birth weight). So I'm still on track to try and avoid a c-section. I thought I was a bit smaller this time around. Mostly because I haven't had strangers ask me if I'm having twins, but I also feel smaller and I'm not as uncomfortable as I got last time--yet.

In other news, Martin found out last night that Nadine is going to close the Place. The last day will be next Saturday. Julia, one of the part time employees, might take the lease over with her husband, so things might stay the same. But we aren't holding our breath, and Martin is looking for something new. Obviously, he has been looking around for wuite some time. But he's REALLY looking now. He'll get two weeks of redundancy pay, so we'll have a month without too much stress before things get scary.

Also, we couldn't speak to anyone at the bank on Tuesday. We've got an appointment this afternoon, so I'll keep everyone posted on that front as I learn more.

Life is pretty exciting right now. Kind of sucks!

Midwife appointment...

So I had a doctor's appointment and a midwife appointment today. I saw the doctor to get eyedrops in case I get pink eye from Martin. He was very nice and gave me the drops even though I'm not currently showing any symptoms. My eye has been a little itchy and runny, so I figured it is always better to be safe than sorry, and much better to pick up my prescriptions where I don't have to pay for them!

The midwife appointment was fun. Dylan came with me, of course, but he was really well behaved. Everything that they check is normal, and the heart beat was fun today. Obviously, the heartbeat itself was just a heart beating. But the baby had the hiccups when they were listening, and it was so great to listen to! They drew some more blood, and I got the results of my last blood work. Good news--I don't have syphillis or AIDS.

We're pretty much ready to go now, and I am seriously tired. Hopefully I will be able to sleep tonight and tomorrow will go well. I've got butterflies in my stomach, just like I always do before I fly. I'm really looking forward to Wednesday!

Guess what? It's a...

...Baby!

We went to the ultrasound this morning. It was a bit stressful getting into Scunthorpe for the 9 am appointment and Martin and I were on less than loving terms when we left the house, but all was good once we got there.

In the words of the sonographer, "I saw everything I expected to see."

This baby is so cute. It was waving, covering it's ears with it's hands, bending double and stretching out, pounding against me with it's tiny fists, and waving. The spine looks great, and it has long legs (though not outside of the normal range). I still think it looks like it has the Priestley nose, but Martin thinks I'm crazy.

I must say, I enjoyed this scan much more than my 20 week with Dylan. The sonographer was way better--more friendly and helpful. She explained everything and got more detail than on the last one.

And, by the way, I think it might be a girl. We told her we didn't want to find out the sexof the baby, but the first view when she started the scan was bum cheeks and legs, and I didn't see any bits. Of course, it could have just been a bad angle. But I'm sitting here thinking to myself that I could have a daughter in 19 weeks. Kind of scary!!!

Martin had to take Dylan out about 10 minutes into the ultrasound. He was getting a little bit noisy and bored. As we were leaving Martin accused me of finding out the sex once he'd left. As if! I actually enjoyed having a surprise with Dylan. Although it would make a lot of sense to find out now, I have totally come around to the idea of having a surprise on the big day.

But I still think it might be a girl.

Anyway, that's the update. The baby looks completely healthy and normal-heart, spine, kidneys, bladder, stomach, brain, etc.

Can't wait to meet this one!

Oh the joys...

I know I already posted today, but it's been such a great evening that I just had to share.

We drove in to Scunny to do our grocery shopping because we needed a new vacuum cleaner. We went to a nearby pub to grab a quick bite to eat. We sat down and got ready to order, and then Dylan threw up all over me. And I do mean ALL over me. I had vomit down my back, on my sleeves, on my trousers, all down the front of me. We were, of course, 20 miles from home and still needing to do our shopping and have our dinner.

I headed for the toilets to get myself cleaned up, and Dylan and Martin ordered our food and went to Tesco. They had to buy me a new outfit, because mine was completely covered in vomit. And this isn't baby vomit, either. This is proper throw up with chunks of food and curdling milk. DISGUSTING!

Anyway, Martin and Dylan did a good job of picking out some new clothes for me. They came back and I got changed in the bathroom. We had our dinner, and then did our grocery shopping. Dylan even had more dinner. I really hope he manages to keep it down. I thought we were done with the throwing up thing.

I think he waits to puke until I'm holding him. The best part was, there wasn't a drop of sick on Dylan. It was all on me.

Maybe he just likes to share with me?

My dating scan...

I had my dating ultrasound at Scunthorpe Hospital yesterday, and it was fun. We got there right on time, and hardly had to wait at all (very strange for the NHS, but it was 9:15 am and one of their first appointments).

First and foremost, everything looks perfectly normal. The baby is beautifully shaped, with a nice round head and the hemispheres of the brain clearly distinguished. We saw the heart fluttering away and saw arms and legs just where they need to be. This one is also a jiffler---was moving around a LOT. It looks like it might have the Priestly nose (Martin's mom's side of the family--oh no)! It also looks slightly bigger than Dylan did in his dating scan. But, I am nearly two weeks further along this time and that makes a big difference at this stage.

I don't want another 9+ pound baby! Can't we make it aorund 8 pounds or so?

I've been given an official due date of March 18. I thought the 17th, so I guessed it pretty good. I am EXACTLY as far along as I thought I was according to the scan. 13 weeks today, and officially done with the first trimester. It's been a rough couple of months, but I think I'm through the worst of it now. I'm not quite so sick all the time and I'm just starting to get my energy back. I'm looking forward to feeling the baby move!

I'll try to put a picture from the ultrasound on the blog--either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how Dylan is today.

Ahh, the bliss of a routine...

I never thought I would be rushing home every night to get here by 8:30 so I could bathe my baby. I never in a million years thought that I would be so inflexible, dropping everything so we didn't mess up his bedtime routine. But I do now!

It's just shy of 10 pm, and Dylan is asleep. This is good, but is the result of nearly 2 hours of hard work and effort, all to get him to sleep until 2:30 or 3 am. We start his bed time routine some time between 8 and 8:30, and he is usually asleep by 9 or 9:30. It is hard work to keep my little man happy, and if leaving right in the middle of a game or turning the television off in the middle of my favorite program is what it takes, I'll do it. If we break from his established routine, even for a single night, Dylan is a nightmare for the next two days. It's all good for Martin, he's at work all day. But I pay for it, and it's not pretty. I just don't think Martin understands that!

Dylan's weekly weigh in was good--he's tipping the scales at 13 lbs. 8 oz. He also had his first round of immunizations on Friday. He was SO good--he only cried for a few minutes (I fed him right after he had the shots--that always shuts him up!) and was just a little bit cranky that night. He's got more shots in 4 weeks, and then more when he's 16 weeks old.

We're doing well--all of us. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. The choir are singing, and our pianist has had surgery and will probably not be there. So I will be playing the piano for sacrament meeting AND for the choir to sing, and it's complicated with Dylan. He is usually doe for a feed during sacrament meeting, and cries like crazy. Last week the choir sang as well, and it was a farce--nobody paid attention to our singing because they were too busy watching my baby get passed around to three or four different people as he was crying and inconsolable. I really need to be released, but so far nobody seems to see that except me and Martin--and Dylan, of course!

Need to wrap things up here--I need some beauty sleep desperately! I think I would do just about anything for a full night's sleep--or even about 6 hours uninterrupted. But I'll settle for my beautiful baby boy and the three hour blocks I'm currently getting.

Dylan John Gilbert's birth story...

Well, it’s been nearly a week since I went into labour, and I finally feel up to writing down the whole experience without crying like a baby myself!

Last Monday was a bank holiday, and Martin and I went to the Cleethorpes seafront with some friends for a picnic. We had a great time, though I was really tired and feeling VERY heavily pregnant. I was eight days over due at that point. But we did a lot of walking, and I played catch with Martin and ate about half a pineapple (you never know what’s going to work, right?).

That night I felt a little bit off. I just put it down to the very active day we’d just had. But then I got up for my nightly 4 am toilet run. On my way back from the bathroom I felt a warm gush. I knew I hadn’t peed myself because I had literally just peed one minute before. So that was it—my waters broke on the upstairs landing about 3:45 am on Tuesday the 28th..

I woke Martin up, and we called the hospital. They paged the Barton team midwives, and we called my parents and his parents to let them know that things were starting. We were tired, but REALLY excited!

When the midwife arrived at 5:00 am, she did an internal exam. Having an exam in my own bedroom was so bizarre! I was still absolutely gushing amniotic fluid, and it had a greenish tinge to it, so she told us that we needed to get to the hospital fairly soon in case it was meconium even though I wasn’t having any contractions yet. So I got a shower and we made our way to the hospital.

We arrived just after 6 am, and by the time we got there I was having contractions every 5 minutes. They weren’t very painful, but they were definitely noticeable. We got booked in, but had to wait until noon to be seen by a doctor because there were two emergency c-sections being done that morning. So we went for a little walk, got some breakfast, bounced on the birthing ball, etc. My contractions kept getting more painful, but nothing I couldn’t manage.

I was finally seen at noon, and things went rapidly downhill from there. The doctor started me on Syntocin to increase the frequency of my contractions, and it worked a treat. Unfortunately, though I was contracting every 3 minutes or so, my cervix was not dilating. In fact, it never dilated to more than one cm. I tried gas and air, but it just made me sick and I spent the rest of my labour experience vomiting every 30 minutes or so. The pain became too much to bear at around 6 pm, so I asked for an epidural. Unfortunately, the anesthetist was assisting in yet another c-section, so I didn’t get the epidural until about 8:30 pm. Finally, after having regular contractions for around 20 hours (about 12 of those hours being hard contractions) the doctors decided to do an emergency c-section. I was so happy that I cried. I honestly don’t think I would have had the energy to give birth naturally at that point anyway, even if I could have!

I had a spinal block (the anesthetist said that my epidural was “patchy” and had probably only been working at about 30%) and it was so good to not be in pain any more. They started prepping me for surgery at about 12:30 am on Wednesday the 29th of August, and Dylan John made his appearance at 1:00 am exactly.

It was hard for me to not be able to hold him right from the beginning. I just wanted to hold him close and kiss him. But Martin was great—he cut the cord and then held Dylan for me to see him the whole time they were stitching me up and I was in recovery being observed. I finally got to hold him at about 3 am, and it was more wonderful than I ever imagined.

We spent all day Wednesday and Thursday in the hospital and came home Friday evening at around 6 pm. They wanted me to stay another day, but I just wanted to get home. The staff were wonderful—especially the midwife who attended the birth and the one who helped me establish breast feeding on Wednesday morning. After months of worry and disgust with the NHS, they totally redeemed themselves in my eyes.

Dylan is absolutely perfect, and I have spent the last 6 days falling madly in love with him. It took a little while for me to realize that this perfect little boy is the baby I’ve been carrying all this time. I think it’s because I was so detached from the actual birth. But we have definitely bonded now, and even though he still scares me sometimes and I am completely overwhelmed by parenthood, I have never been so happy in my life. We waited over 5 years for this little guy, and he was worth all of it!

The Midwife's visit...

So yeah, had my home visit today. Let me just say that it was a little bit surreal to have an internal exam in my bedroom. It really felt like a violation of my privacy. I think I actually would have preferred to drive to the Scunthorpe hospital.

At any rate, it was a good visit. The baby's heart beat was good, as was my blood pressure. The midwife said that she could feel the baby's head, and though she couldn't tell how dilated I am, she did say that it seemed things were on their way. I am scheduled for an induction on Wednesday at 9 am, so we'll see how it goes.

The neighbor, Joanne, had her baby on Tuesday. We went and met little Marley this evening, and he is a VERY cute baby. Even Martin thinks so. I was hoping that holding a newborn baby would stimulate some movement, but so far no dice.

Martin and I may be going to Cleethorpes beach tomorrow with the Mundays and the Enderby-Whalls. I'm looking forward to it. Of course, it would be better if we can't go because we're at the hospital. Either way, I'll have some good pictures to post tomorrow.

Martin is starting his leave on Tuesday. If we have the baby, great! If not, his dad is coming over Tuesday morning and they are going to work on our entrance hallway. Once the door is moved across and Martin has built the stud walls for the hallway, our home teacher Nathan is going to get the work men back in to finish that space off as well. My living room and entrance hallway should be done before mom and dad get here (although without the bamboo flooring).

That's the update.

More tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted!

This is what 1 week over due looks like!!! Thankfully, no bigger than full term looked!

Like a broken record...

I am STILL pregnant! Only 3 days until my due date, and man am I ever feeling it. I'm really tired, and getting anxious to have the whole labour thing over and done with, but other than that, things are fine. I feel great--healthy and all, I just get tired really quickly.

My maternity leave has officially started, and I can't even begin to express how nice it is to not have to get up and go to work every morning. I have got a lot of stuff done this week (though not as much as I need to), and the 2 hour nap I took today was BLISS!

The most exciting stuff that's been going on is the work on our house though--forget the pregnancy! Our living room is practically livable now. We had plasterers in on Tuesday and Wednesday and are having a joiner come in tomorrow to fit the skirting board and trim around the doorways. Our home teacher, Nathan Whall, set it all up. His family own a local building company, and he was really concerned about the state of our front room with this baby on the way. He is a saint! Our walls are plastered and smooth and beautiful. We have a ceiling! And some members in the Elder's Quorum are coming to help paint on Saturday. We actually bought paint for the living room--I thought we'd never get to this point. We are so blessed!

I took a few pictures while Dave and Steve were plastering, and I'll post them when I get a chance. Right now I need to go downstairs and help Martin prime the skirting board so it's ready for the joiner in the morning. He wants to get it done before it goes up since it will be much easier that way.

Pictures are coming. My living room is the most glorious thing I have ever seen.

Oh yeah, and I have started having contractions. They were pretty strong last night and coming around every 20-45 minutes, but they stopped while I was sleeping and I've only had a few today. But, for all the folks who crave the dirty details, I've also had a "show" (at least I think I have, and the midwife said that's what it sounds like to her) so expect to have the baby quite close to my due date, if not a little bit before. But now that I'm not working, I'm content to get cat naps during the day when I need them and tuck in for the long haul. They will induce me on the 29th if I haven't had the baby by then.

Emma helped me do a belly cast--it was quite an adventure. From slathering myself with petroleum jelly to applying strips of plaster of paris infused gauze to looking at the huge finished product. She did a great job though, and now I will have a permanent reminder of how huge my baby belly was. I can go into labor any time now and be perfectly happy.

Midwife Appointment (hopefully the last one)...

I saw the midwife yesterday. It was Rose, the not too friendly but very efficient one. Amazingly enough, she was very friendly with me yesterday. It was a pretty good appointment.

I asked her if she could tell how far down the baby had dropped, and she was feeling around for me to check it out. She said that little baby G's head is pretty well engaged. Apparently, she could only feel a little bit of his/her head above my pubic bone. This explains the PAIN in my hips and pelvis, and also the head butting I've been receiving during bouts of baby hiccups. So obviously this means that the baby is still head down :)

The baby's heart beat is still strong and steady, and my blood pressure and urine are fine. We did discuss my anxiety about the baby being really big, and she told me that the consultant at Scunthorpe hospital doesn't do anything about big babies anyway--no early inductions, no extra ultrasounds, nothing. He basically just lets you go to term and does a c-section if the baby is too big to be born the "real" way. So even if my pregnancy WERE being more carefully monitered, I would still be pregnant, huge, and (patiently?) waiting for some signs of labor.

The next scheduled appointment with the midwife is August 20--one day AFTER my due date. I really hope I don't see them again! It would be great if I could give birth right before my due date or on it. Every day after August 19th will go so slowly!

In great news, Martin has all of the wiring completely done and cleaned up in the front room. AND, in even better news, we have some plasterers coming in on Tuesday. They are going to do the ceiling and then skim the room. On Tuesday night or Wednesday I will have finished walls and ceiling in my living room. I thought this day would never come. Of course, it hasn't come yet, but I am still so excited I can hardly stand it.

This weekend should be pretty good. The weather is glorious--about 80-85 degrees F and DRY! It has been over a week since it last rained. I have been line drying all of our laundry and have actually had to water my nasturtiums, my tomatoes, and my french beans. I am planning on having Martin take our old dining set outside so I can paint it. Then we'll use it for dining al fresco in the garden. Lovely!

I am also planning on doing a belly cast--hopefully tonight. I want to go over to Emma's house if she is available to help me. If Emma can't, Deanna has offered to help me with it instead. If I go to Emma's house I can use her sewing machine to make the curtains for the nursery though--I bought some cute fabric last weekend.

This is my last post from work--my maternity leave starts as of Monday. I will be updating from home from now on. I am sad to be leaving Alan Dick UK, but I am so happy that I'll be able to get a little rest and get some work done on the nursery. Maybe now that I won't be at work all day long that whole "nesting" thing will happen and my house will be immaculate by the time the baby gets here.

Martin's baseball team won their last game, and they are league champions. This means that they are going to the playoffs, so now he is rooting for an early birth as well. If I can have the baby early, he can go to the playoffs (depending on how I am feeling). He's pretty excited about that!

Sorry--this is a really rambling post. Lots of information and really no direction to it at all!
