How do you feel about leaving your kids in the car while you run in a shop to do a quick errand? Like pay for your petrol or buy a stamp or pick up some train tickets or use an ATM? It's such a hassle to get both kids out of the car to do these things when I'm only going to be about 3 minutes, but I'm not sure it's cool to leave them in there on their own. With the doors locked, of course. Any thoughts on this? I'm not sure if it's kosher to do it or not!

My personal rule is that I only do it if I will be super quick, and I can see the car the whole time. If the car is out of my line of sight, I don't like to leave them.
Now days you have to be careful, my sister in law, parked her car in front of a shop, she ran in for maybe 2 minutes and left her little 2 year old in the car, doors locked and another lady watching called the COPS on her. There was a big whole deal about her neglecting her child. It's just not the same as it was when we were little. I still don't leave my little ones alone. It's not worth it to me. I say, wait tell they are older and more responsible. Just my thoughts. XOXO
I'm with Velecia. My community freaks out about it. There was a couple in my city who had their kids taken away by DFS after the mom left them in the parking lot at the post office while she went in and mailed a package. Isn't that insane? She has her kids back now, but it's absolutely ridiculous they were taken in the first place. I would love to be able to leave my kids in the car, cause it makes a lot of sense if it's not too hot, and they're happy watching a DVD or something. But it's not something I risk doing.
I leave them only if I'll be outside myself and can see the car the entire time. I don't feel comfortable leaving them alone (except for my 1 minute walks to the mailbox while they are in the house with the doors locked).
i can honestly i do it more frequently now that allee is 11. Now a days you have to be extremely carefull in the smaller towns i dont thinkits much of an issue but in the bigger town i WOULD NOT do it. I agree with all of the previous ladys' comments..with smaller babes like yours i know its super hard to haul them around but you also playing with fire with knowing you might get burned so just go with your gutt feeling on this one
I looked it up because I was curious, and found that it is illegal in 14 states!
Hey Jamie - you got me thinking on this one! I think strictly speaking in this country you have to keep the children 'under observation' so leaving them in the house on their own, is an absolute no but going to pay for petrol, when you can still see them safely strapped in in the car, is ok (my argument is it would be more dangerous to try and get the toddlers across the floor court while carrying the baby at the same time, it's bad enough in a car park). I guess other places, like the ATM, is dependant on whether you can see them or not. It's so hard because taking them with you makes a 3 minute job into a 10 minute nightmare doesn't it but I guess I agree with those who think better safe than sorry. Charlotte C xx
